The Arizona Diamondbacks brought up another bat to the infield by promoting second baseman Andy Young, who was acquired in the Paul Goldschmidt trade.
In a corresponding move, the D-backs sent infielder Josh Rojas to the team’s alternate training site. Rojas had only appeared in one at-bat, striking out.
Young was ranked as the No. 21 prospect in the D-backs farm system by MLB Pipeline after splitting his 2019 season between Double-A and Triple-A.
He batted .271 with 29 home runs, 81 RBIs and 89 runs scored in 133 combined games with the Jackson Generals and Reno Aces.
Young was part of the package the D-backs received from the St. Louis Cardinals in the Paul Goldschmidt trade in 2018.
He has yet to make his major league debut. Drafted in Round 37 of the 2016 MLB Draft from Indiana State, the 26-year-old has spent four full seasons climbing the ranks in the minors.
Young was optioned to Triple-A Reno on March 9 during spring training. Young is one of 10 infielders listed on the D-backs’ current 40-man roster.
Arizona has been aggressive giving some of its top prospects early work this year, especially after the team has struggled to find enough offense. Earlier in the week, the team called up catcher/outfielder Daulton Varsho, who made his major league debut Thursday with a pinch-hit walk against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
