Oakland University student Majd Faraj raised about $70,000 to send much-needed medical supplies to Lebanon following last week's explosion in Beirut.
Faraj is a second year medical student at the OU William Beaumont School of Medicine and was born and raised in Lebanon. He set up a GoFundMe page in July with a goal of raising $15,000 to help his home country battle COVID-19.
After the explosion Tuesday, Aug. 4 that killed more than 150 people and injured thousands more, donations have soared past Faraj’s initial goal. As of Sunday, more than 2,600 people donated a total of $69,474.
The funds will be used to purchase supplies from Southfield-based World Medical Relief. These supplies will go to Rafik Hariri University Hospital, a large nonprofit hospital in Lebanon. Faraj worked directly with Dr. Firass Abiad, head of the hospital, to ensure they would accept the supplies and identify what was needed most.
Through previous volunteer efforts at World Medical Relief, Faraj was familiar with the organization and reached out to determine how he could get medical supplies from metro Detroit to Lebanon. He learned, if he raised enough to cover the cost of supplies and shipping, he would be able to send about $40,000 worth of gear at a cost of about $15,000.
"I’ve only been in the U.S. for four and half years. ... One of the main reasons I chose medicine is because of my concern for global health and strengthening a connection between U.S. healthcare and international healthcare, whether in Lebanon or elsewhere," Faraj told The Arab American News.
