Rays send down Ryan Thompson, Brian O’Grady - Tampa Bay Times

ST. PETERSBURG — The Rays sent down rookie reliever Ryan Thompson and outfielder Brian O’Grady to meet the league-wide mandate to reduce rosters from 30 to 28 by noon Thursday.

Thompson, 28, was a surprise choice for the opening-day roster, having made a solid impression in the original spring training and the Spring 2.0 summer camp after pitching most of 2019 at Double-A Montgomery. The right-hander with the sidearm delivery pitched in four games for the Rays, allowing one earned run over six innings while striking out four.

O’Grady was called up on Tuesday to take the place of outfielder Manuel Margot, who was placed on the bereavement list following the death of his father in the Dominican Republic, but did not play.

Both were optioned to the alternate training site in Port Charlotte. Manager Kevin Cash said he expected O’Grady and Thompson to be with the team again at some point this season.

Margot can miss between three and seven games under bereavement-list rules, and when he returns the Rays will have to make another move. He was headed to the Dominican Republic, and the team was not sure yet when he would return.

One option could be reducing their catching group from three to two, as Kevan Smith has seen very limited action. But since Smith is out of options, the Rays would risk losing him via waivers if they tried to send him down.

Major League Baseball announced late Wednesday that it amended another rule on the fly, as rosters will stay at 28 for the remainder of the regular season and postseason.

The original plan was to reduce from 30 to 28 on Thursday, and then from 28 to 26 (the original number for the 2020 season) after two more weeks. Under the new plan, teams will still be allowed to add an extra player, their 29th, for doubleheaders, as the Rays have on Saturday against the Yankees.

The league also is reportedly implementing stricter rules on travel (such as needing permission to leave hotels) and other COVID-19 protocols, such as mask-wearing in the dugouts, as well as stronger punishments for those who violate the protocols.
