Good morning and welcome to your Morning Matters.
It’s Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2020, and as I mentioned yesterday, as part of our “Community Matters” series, Mahoning Matters — along with our partners Stambaugh Auditorium and The Business Journal — will host a live, virtual discussion next Tuesday at 6 p.m., “Racism as a Public Health Crisis in the Valley.”
I'll moderate the evening’s discussion with another impressive lineup of panelists:
- U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown;
- Bryant Youngblood, assistant director for the Academy for Urban Scholars in Youngstown;
- Samantha Turner, Youngstown City Council member;
- Jaladah Aslam, president of the Youngstown Warren Black Caucus;
- Dr. Lashale Pugh, director at Dr. Shale's Enterprises and medical geographer.
Like our July 14 event, you'll be able to watch this live on Crowdcast and on our Facebook page. I’ll actually moderate from the historic Stambaugh Auditorium this time while our guests will stream in from their homes. It is an important discussion, and what really makes these events fascinating are questions from you. If you have a question for one of us on the panel, send them to mark@mahoningmatters.com.
And let’s all be extremely careful out there.
And here are more of the things you need to know about what's happening in the Mahoning Valley:
As Ohio surpassed 90,000 confirmed cases of the coronavirus Tuesday, Gov. Mike DeWine announced all K-12 students will be required to wear masks upon returning to in-class instruction this fall.
While some will surely claim the change is impractical — or even authoritarian — local officials, like superintendent David Janofa, are just grateful for some guidance from DeWine, who has shied from issuing direction to Ohio school districts on going back to school.

Peaberry’s Cafe was busy Tuesday with customers supporting the business after it closed early Monday because of a mask conflict. “Being a small business owner on the front line of keeping my own staff safe, I support Peaberry’s owner 100 [percent]. These are very difficult times for small businesses. We’ve had flippant and rude behavior, too. It makes me so upset. Walk in our shoes. Everyone says they like to support small businesses. After being closed for two months, the best way to support us is to wear a mask while shopping with us.”
