TUSCALOOSA, Ala- Tuscaloosa County’s 911 system now allows text service requests for police, fire, and medical emergencies.
The system intends to be useful for those who are hearing or speech impaired or those in situations where it is not safe to place a call.
All Tuscaloosa County emergency operations centers will be able to accept and send out messages to the public.
The text will work the same as any other.
“You enter 911 into the text field and type your situation and where you are at,” said Rod Coleman, Tuscaloosa County’s 911 Director.
An application officer will find your location based on where the text is located.
“There will be a conversation between the texter and the 911 operator to get more information about what’s going on and how we can get help to them,” said Coleman.
Tuscaloosa County encourages those in need of police, fire or medical emergencies to call 911 if they can.
