Well wishes are pouring in for former Gov. Chris Christie, who is hospitalized at Morristown Medical Center after he tested positive for the coronavirus Saturday.
Christie, who suffers from asthma and has long battled with his weight, said he’s experiencing mild symptoms and checked himself into the hospital as a precautionary measure.
New Jersey officials from both sides of the political aisle are sending their support to the former governor, a Republican.
“Tammy and I continue to keep Governor Christie in our thoughts and prayers. We all know he is a fighter and wish him a full and speedy recovery,” Gov. Phil Murphy, a Democrat, said in a statement Saturday night.
State Senate President Stephen Sweeney, D-Gloucester, who worked with Christie on major legislation during the governor’s two terms, noted he’s “glad he checked himself in because he has underlying conditions."
“I hope he gets through this quickly,” Sweeney told NJ Advance Media.
Christie, 58, was hospitalized for an asthma attack in his first term as governor in July 2011, and kept a rescue inhaler at bay at the time. It was the first time in more than 20 years he had to be hospitalized. He underwent gastric band surgery to lose weight in 2013.
State Assembly Minority Leader Jon Bramnick, R-Union, a longtime Christie friend and ally, said Saturday night “our thoughts are with the Governor and the Christie family at this difficult time."
"Wishing my friend the best,” Bramnick told NJ Advance Media.
State Republican Party Chairman Doug Steinhardt said he was sending thoughts and prayers to Christie and “every New Jersey family dealing with COVID-19."
"Wishing all a full and fast recovery,” Steinhardt told NJ Advance Media.
Christie is one of the dozen aides and politicians within the Trump’s circle who have experienced mild coronavirus symptoms after a week of political events — from highly attended ceremonies to outdoor fundraisers — as the country approaches Election Day.
Christie spent four days at the White House with the president ahead of Tuesday’s debate. He later traveled to ABC News' studios for a post-debate roundtable in New York City.
ABC has since told staffers who came in contact with Christie to quarantine, and wished him “a speedy recovery.”
Trump announced he tested positive for the virus early Friday morning, hours after he visited his Bedminster golf club for a fundraiser Thursday afternoon. He was admitted to Walter Reed Medical Center later that day, and released a four-minute video on Twitter late Saturday evening in which he said he was feeling “much better now.”
