GIRLS TENNIS
Div. II NE Jackson Sectional
Orrville’s Claudia Adcock simply has been on a tear all season and Saturday was no different as she handled all challengers. The junior standout pounded her way past Hoban’s Campbell Miller 6-0, 6-2 before clinching a the sectional title with a come-from-behind win 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 over St. Vincent-St. Mary’s Andie McKnight. Adcock will now open district play on Friday at the Springside Racket Club as a No. 1 seed.
“Claudia didn’t play her best in the first set and her opponent just didn’t miss early on,” said Red Rider coach Kent Smith about Adcock’s second set victory. “She hasn’t faced much adversity this season and she was able to really dig deep to turn the momentum around in that second set. You just can’t simulate in practice that type of pressure that there is in the championship match.”
At doubles, Jenna Rowland and Jayne Wallace opened with a tough 6-0, 6-0 loss to Canton South’s Destiny Winans and Abigail Franks, but they bounced back in their second match of the day with a 7-6, 6-2 win over Manchester’s Tess Christy and Emily Le to advance and play Friday as the no. 3-seed.
“I was really proud of them,” said Smith. “In the first match against the 1-seed, between nerves and a really strong team, things didn’t go very well. In the next match, they played some fearless tennis, won some big points at the net and mixed in some good lobs to keep them off balance.
“To be unseeded in the tournament and come out a No. 3 seed is really quite the accomplishment.”
Div. I NE Springside Sectional
Going into Saturday, Wooster’s tandem of Emma Boreman and Alexia Kakanuru already had their spot at districts locked up. Instead, they focused on seeding for next Thursday when district action starts at the Springside Racquet Club as they look to add to already illustrious season. The pair won the Ohio Cardinal Conference first doubles title and played a key part in the Generals first-ever OCC Championship.
The Generals opened with a tough 6-0, 6-0 setback to Lakshmy Arakoni and Helen Lee, from Brecksville, who were the No. 1 seed. In the battle for third place, Boreman and Kakanuru duked it out with Walsh Jesuit’s Katie Masteller and Stephanie Waltz, but fell 6-2, 6-3.
“These two girls have played incredible tennis all season,” said Wooster coach Matt Knight. “Emma has a 34-7 record and when she plays, it’s easy to see why. Alexia went 13-1 as a freshman and has immense potential. They have worked extremely hard all season to get into the district tournament and I’m confident they will give it their all on Thursday and hopefully we move on to the state tournament.”
