President Trump on Wednesday condemned the mass unrest roiling Philadelphia following the fatal police shooting of a knife-wielding black man and blasted local officials for letting the violence spill across two nights.

The Pennsylvania city has been rocked by looting and mass protests after cops shot and killed 27-year-old Walter Wallace Jr., whose family said was experiencing “mental health problems.”

Trump said Wallace Jr.’s shooting death was “a terrible event” and confirmed his federal government was investigating but said the city’s Democratic officials needed to bring an end to the violence that has led to at least 90 arrests.

“What I’m witnessing is terrible and frankly, the mayor or whoever it is that’s allowing people to riot and loot and not stop them is just a horrible thing,” Trump said during a campaign event in Arizona.

The commander-in-chief said he was ready to send National Guard troops to quell the uprising but told reporters they weren’t allowed to enter unless authorities in the Pennsylvania city asked for assistance.

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney on Tuesday acknowledged that he discussed federal troops with Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf but did not say whether a decision was made.

A citywide curfew will go into effect at 9 p.m. Wednesday after two nights of looting and ransacking, which saw Philly cops overpowered by thousands of rioters.
