Chinese President Xi Jinping offered his well-wishes to President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump after they were diagnosed with COVID-19 on Friday.
Xi sent a message to Trump wishing for a speedy recovery, Chinese state media and Reuters reported. The president spent the night at Walter Reed National Medical Center where he expects to stay for at least a few days while he recovers from the virus.
Also joining Xi was North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un, who sent his best wishes, too.
“He sincerely hoped that they would recover as soon as possible. He hoped they will surely overcome it,” the Korean Central News Agency reported. “He sent warm greetings to them.”
The two nations often had stormy relations with Trump. While he has at times heaped praise on them, he has also not been afraid to lash out.
The president has leveled tough tariffs on Chinese products in an effort to protect American-made goods as part of a years-long trade war. He has also in the past threatened to completely destroy North Korea in a rain of “fire and fury” over the country’s refusal to dismantle their nuclear weapons.
