Trump Vows to Send His Goons In on Election Day to Stop Ballot Counting - Vanity Fair

With one day to go until the 2020 election, Donald Trump and Joe Biden are making their closing arguments for why they’re the candidate to lead the country for the next four years. For Biden, that’s meant basically promising Americans they won’t have to wake up every morning wondering what deranged shit the president of the United States tweeted in the middle of the night, or worry that he might try to kill them with an untested vaccine. For Trump, it’s meant giving up trying to change the perception that he’s a domestic terrorist and just openly vowing to steal the election.

In addition to sending out his team to engage in voter intimidation and other tactics, on Sunday, Trump said he’ll be sending his lawyers in as soon as the election ends on Tuesday, in what sure sounds like a bid to stop all the ballots from being counted. Referring to the Supreme Court rulings that have allowed North Carolina and Pennsylvania to count absentee ballots that are postmarked before Election Day but arrive after Tuesday, Trump told reporters, “I think it was a terrible decision for our country. And I think it was a very dangerous decision for our country. Because you’re going to have one or two or three states, depending on how it ends up, where they’re tabulating ballots and the rest of the world is waiting to find out. And I think there’s great danger to it, and I think a lot of fraud and misuse can take place. I think it’s a terrible decision by the Supreme Court. A terrible decision.” He added that while he’s not sure those decisions will be overturned, he’s got a plan to bypass them. “Now, I don’t know if that’s going to be changed,” he said, “because we’re going to go in night of, as soon as that election is over, we’re going in with our lawyers. I don’t think it’s fair that we have to wait a long period of time after the election. Should’ve gotten their ballots in a long time before that. Could’ve gotten their ballots in a month ago. I think it’s a ridiculous decision.”

In reality, what’s “fair” and, y’know, democratic, is for all ballots to be counted before declaring the election over—something the current president of the United States is trying to prevent. And due to the whole pandemic situation, counting the millions of ballots that come in by mail will very likely take us past Tuesday night without a clear winner. Per NBC News:

Pennsylvania and North Carolina are two of the most hotly contested swing states. In Pennsylvania specifically, election officials aren’t allowed to ready the ballots for tabulation ahead of polls’ closing—a process known as “pre-canvassing”—that would help speed up the counting process. Earlier Sunday, at a rally in Dubuque, Iowa, Trump sought to discredit absentee ballots as election officials in some states have cautioned that it may take days to complete the count.

“We should know the result of the election by the evening of November 3rd,” Trump said. With early voting setting records as states have expanded the ability to use it, nearly 100 million people have already cast their ballots. Polls show Democratic nominee Joe Biden with a large lead among early voters in key states, while Trump maintains a significant advantage among those who have yet to vote.

Naturally, because everything out of Trump or the Trump campaign’s mouth is either a projection or a confession, his allies are now claiming that it’s Democrats who are trying to cheat their way to victory.

On ABC News’ This Week, Trump campaign senior adviser Jason Miller baselessly claimed Sunday that Democrats will seek to “steal” the election back from Trump if he holds a lead in some key swing states Tuesday.
