CHAGRIN FALLS, Ohio -- I was out and about one afternoon 18 months ago on business. I was driving by our local rescue shelter when, for some reason, my heart yanked me into the parking lot. Within minutes, I was strolling and admiring all the dogs waiting for their forever homes.
Our daughter was looking for a companion for her more mature pup in Southern Ohio, and by fluke, I spotted this little darling -- Candace. By the next day, my daughter had joyfully adopted her.
Unfortunately, within weeks, due to a change in her work schedule -- and the two pups not really loving on each other -- Candace needed to come back. That was so hard. It broke my daughter’s heart as well as ours.
We already had two dogs and two cats at our home, but this little 11½-year-old Yorkie with no teeth and needing a lot of love stole my heart. Huge. Within two days after her going back to the shelter, I had already been there checking on her.
As I had become so bonded with Candace, it was destiny that she join our family here in Chagrin Falls. On the third day, our family became a plus one, with Candace coming here to her forever home.
For all her life, Candace had lived in a situation that no pup or innocent soul should have to endure.
At our home, she has taken over my spot on our couch, snuggling in her soft, cuddly blankets. She has a hard time catching a ball with no teeth (they were extracted due to ill attention before we adopted her.)
But she loves feeling free and having the breeze of the wind on her face. We bought her a pet stroller for those times that she tires of walking, and we are waiting on delivery of a doggie knapsack to help her feel more secure going for a walk with me here and there.
If I had not gone with my sixth sense that day, turning into Rescue Village, my little Pop Tart and I may have never found each other. It was Spirits’ will. Candace finally found the “home” where she was destined to land. We are blessed!!
