MELVILLE, N.Y. (1010 WINS) -- A Long Island man is accused of using social media to solicit sexual selfies from girls, who he then allegedly paid.
Bradley Garyn, 27, sought explicit images and video, as well as photos of feet, from the girls in exchange for money, Suffolk District Attorney Tim Sini said Friday when announcing the arrest.
According to Newsday, Garyn allegedly contacted girls between the ages of 12 and 15 on Snapchat, offering them $10 for selfies or photos of their feet. He increased that amount to as much as $500 for sexually explicit photos, authorities say.
The Suffolk DA and Suffolk County Police began an investigation back in September that revealed evidence of 14 alleged victims, according to the report.
Garyn is accused of paying the victims electronically using mobile payment apps and Amazon gift cards. In at least one case, he allegedly threatened to disseminate images of a girl if she didn’t send him more, a tactic known as “sextortion.”
“This is a scheme that is unfortunately becoming more and more common, and that is adult males preying upon younger girls — including juveniles and children — to get them to send inappropriate photos and videos, including nude photos or videos involving sex acts, via social media,” Sini said in a press release.
“They often engage in what we call 'sextortion,' which is essentially threatening victims into sending these photos and videos or else the perpetrator will widely distribute the explicit images that were previously sent,” Sini said.
Garyn, of Melville, faces up to 15 years in prison on charges that include use of a child in a sexual performance, promoting a sexual performance by a child and disseminating indecent material to minors in the first degree.
Anyone who believes they are a victim is urged to contact the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office by calling 631-853-4161 or emailing InfoDA@suffolkcountyny.gov.
