GENEVA, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Debbie Kottkamp has been delivering mail and dropping off packages in Geneva’s Eagle Brook neighborhood for the last 20 years.
“She’s just the nicest person you’ll ever meet. She always waves, she always smiles, she’ll stop and chat with you for a few minutes,” resident Phillip Hass told WBBM.
The postal worker is now retiring to spend more time with her family, so Hass, along with dozens of his neighbors, decided to decorate their mailboxes for her final shift.
“It was fun! We did little signs for our mailboxes and other people had the balloons and the streamers and whatnot,” added Hass.
Some mailboxes even had small gifts stuffed inside.
The pandemic kept the farewell festivities to a minimum, but Hass told WBBM Debbie was incredibly thankful to see the outpouring of love.
“A lot of people were trying to meet her at the mailbox as she came by to say goodbye and she was just very thankful. It was just a nice thing to do for her and we wanted to let her know that she’s appreciated,” said Hass.
