ANN ARBOR, Mich. (WXYZ) - Firefighters held an emotional send-off for one of their own, a 45-year-old with colon cancer, as he was moved from a Michigan hospital to hospice care.
Craig Sindlinger, a firefighter and father of two, was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2019. He was discharged from the hospital to home hospice Tuesday night. The emotional moment was caught on video, as first responders saluted and applauded the man, his wife by his side.
“They lined up and saluted him. I had never, never dreamed anything like that would happen. I’m just in awe of the support,” said Craig’s wife, Julie Sindlinger.
Craig Sindlinger spent 20 years with the Ann Arbor Fire Department. For the last 10 years, he was a training officer and coordinator for emergency medical services.
More than 45 firefighters and EMS personnel filled the hospital parking lot, red and blue lights flashing as the man rode home one last time in the fire truck seat he filled for so many years.
“This is really difficult for us because we can’t fix this. We can’t make this better, and that’s not something we’re used to,” said Ann Arbor Fire Chief Mike Kennedy.
Craig Sindlinger’s dedication was also recognized at an outdoor ceremony at his home.
“He was great at his job. I always was very in awe of him for that,” Julie Sindlinger said.
Kennedy says firefighters face a higher risk of cancer, even long after the fire is out.
