Every day people go and check their mailbox.
More often that not, what they find inside are bills, credit card mailers, and sheets of flimsy coupons.
But what if, you could saunter out and find a handwritten letter from someone who happened to think of you and have a kind letter sent on their behalf?
“It is the best feeling in the world to know that someone is thinking about you,” said Jessica Ball, founder of the non-profit Hannah’s Care Packages.
That is the goal of Hannah’s Care Packages, a local non-profit who works to bring hope, encouragement, and support to parents of children with life-altering illnesses or chronic physical conditions by bringing care packages filled with items they may need during hospital stays, according to their website.
However, with everything going on with the pandemic which halted in-person delivery of care packages to those in need, those involved had to find another way.
“We were at a standstill as an organization,” Ball said. “We were forced to be creative.”
Thus, the Send A Card Program was created.
Ball explained anyone in the general public can go to their website, fill out a form of who and where they want the card sent, and Ball and volunteers will write the message, and send it free of charge.
“There are so many who need encouragement right now, and we have all gone through tough times this past year,” she said. “We wanted to connect with more than just the families that we typically serve.”
The Send A Card Program is open to anyone, and is funded by Thrivent Financial, a Fortune 500 not-for-profit financial services organization, who gives $250 to any team project.
The money donated to Hannah’s Care Packages through this method helped purchase cards and stamps to get the program going.
“We plan on using those action team funds to keep it going,” Ball said.
People can participate by visiting the Hannah’s Care Packages website, and filling out the Send A Card form for a volunteer to handwrite and send out to the recipient.
“Our cards are written by HCP staff and board members who have worked closely with our Hannah's Families and also have a huge heart for the trials and tribulations that many people face,” their website states. “...Once we receive the form, we will send out a card to them within the following week. Please be sure to include any specific wording you want enclosed in the letter in the comments section as well as any details you want to/feel comfortable providing.”
Ball stated this program is not limited to Richmond, or even Madison County; cards can be sent all across the United States.
