Maryland’s Republican Gov. Larry Hogan said he will ask lawmakers to approve an emergency Covid-19 relief package that would include direct payments to low-to-moderate income residents and tax relief for businesses.
Under the $1 billion proposal, about 400,000 eligible residents would receive two payments equaling up to $450 for individuals and $750 for families. The governor also wants to repeal state and local income taxes on unemployment benefits.
Mr. Hogan said Monday he would seek quick passage when lawmakers start their annual session Wednesday so “we can immediately get these much-needed dollars out the door and into the pockets of those who desperately need it.”
Officials in a few states have taken steps recently to get cash straight into the hands of some residents, over and above the stimulus payments approved by the U.S. Congress. Leaders in New Mexico and Colorado acted last fall, when prospects for a new federal coronavirus package appeared uncertain.
Congress last month passed a measure, signed by President Trump, that included payments of $600 per adult and per child for individuals with adjusted gross incomes under $75,000.
