SAGINAW, MI — Eva Whitt of Saginaw will turn 105 on Monday, Feb. 8, and her family is inviting the community to join in the celebration.
Vonnie Scott hopes to collect 105 birthday cards and coordinate a parade of 105 cars to mark her great aunt’s special day.
“When she turned 100, we started doing a party every year for her because every day is a gift,” said Scott of Saginaw.
For the past few years, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Whitt’s family celebrated her birthdays with parties at Serenity Springs Assisted Living & Memory Care, where she now lives, a new outfit in her favorite color, purple, and enough cake and ice cream for all the residents and staff. But her 104th birthday celebration last year was atypical because of coronavirus and Scott said she wants to make up for it this year.
“We just look forward to celebrating her,” she said.
Whitt, originally of Yazoo, Mississippi, was born in 1916 during World War 1 when Woodrow Wilson was president, Ford Motor Co. was selling the Model T, films were silent, and women and people of color were denied the right to vote. She lived her adult life in Saginaw, was married to the late James Whitt, and is a longtime member of Greater Renaissance Missionary Baptist Church.
“She says that she attributes her long life to her faith in God and good, clean living,” Scott said.
Scott is asking family, friends and community members to send birthday cards to: Mrs. Eva Whitt, c/o Vonnie Scott, 101 S. 21st St. Saginaw, MI 48601 by Monday, Feb. 1.
She’s also inviting people to decorate their cars with signs and balloons and participate in a parade on Whitt’s birthday. She’s still finalizing the details, but the group will likely meet at Handley School, 224 N. Elm St., and then drive by Serenity Springs, 1413 Gratiot Ave., where Whitt will be able to watch from a window, at about noon. Scott asked anyone who is interested in learning more or participating in the parade to contact her via Facebook.
