(WGR 550) - Before the Buffalo Sabres played in Washington on Sunday against the Capitals, they sent Dylan Cozens to the taxi squad and activated Casey Mittelstadt from the taxi squad.
Kyle Okposo was also activated from injured reserve and will play his first game of the season. He’ll go in for Tage Thompson.
Cozens scored his first NHL goal in the Sabres’ last game on Friday, but Krueger said it was just part of the plan.
"We need to keep the taxi squad players active, and we need to watch the load on some of the younger players," Krueger said ahead of Sunday's game "Plus Casey has been outstanding in his work so far.”
Krueger saw some signs in some young players before, and he doesn’t want to make the same mistake this season.
“I saw last year a few times some players just check out mentally with too much of a load, so it’s not just the physical side it’s the mental side too,” Krueger said.
Linus Ullmark will get his second-straight start in goal. Ullmark is 0-1-1 with a 2.44 goals-against average and .906 save percentage.
Buffalo has gone two straight games without a point from Jack Eichel, Taylor Hall and Sam Reinhart. Buffalo lost both of those games.
Tom Wilson was injured midway through Friday’s game and won’t play for Washington. He joins Alex Ovechkin, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Dmitry Orlov and Ilya Samsonov on the sideline. Those four players are under COVID-19 quarantine.
Washington is coming back with Vitek Vanecek in goal. His two NHL wins have come against the Sabres. He’s 2-0-1 with a 2.90 goals-against average and an .898 save percentage.
The Capitals are a perfect 3-0-0 against the Sabres this season.
Join Brian Koziol for the pregame starting at 2 p.m. EST on ESPN 1520. He’ll be joined by Krueger, Okposo and Jake McCabe.
