CLEVELAND, Ohio (92.3 The Fan) – The Cleveland Indians plan to change their name and branding in the near future, and research to guide them with the change is underway.
The team sent out a survey to select fans concerning the future branding of the franchise on Tuesday but did not solicit submissions for a new team name, color scheme or logos.
The first question asked of fans how they felt about the decision to change the name before moving on to questions about the importance of attributes for a new name related to the franchise’s history, city of Cleveland or baseball.
Fans were also asked about uniforms and if the team should continue to have gray, navy, white and red jerseys and retain its current color scheme of red, midnight navy and white.
Should block CLEVELAND remain on jerseys and should the franchise continue to use the ‘Block C’ trademark were also asked in the survey, which also included questions about fandom and attendance.
While the questions were generic in nature and nothing of substance can be gleaned from them, the survey was another reminder that change is coming for the charter member of the American League.
In December, the franchise announced it would change its name following a six-month period of research that began after Washington’s NFL franchise immediately dropped their nickname, which was racist and offensive.
There is no clear timetable for the change, but the team will remain the Indians until the switch is made instead of opting for a temporary placeholder name while new branding is designed.
