Local kids send love to seniors through their artwork - KTTC

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- Many have experienced the gut-wrenching feelings of loneliness, and some seniors have felt it far too many time this past year.

A Rochester woman recently launched an effort to try to ease that pain. Jayme Womeldorf's son goes to George W. Gibbs Elementary School in Rochester, and she got an idea that would engage children isolated at home distance learning, while helping isolated seniors.

She asked the George Gibbs students to give a piece of their "little hearts" and make cards for seniors in nursing homes. The kids stepped up to the challenge in a big way. The final total was 667 cards that Jayme plans to give out this week.

"As I counted them, tears are coming down my eyes," Womeldorf said. "It was just seeing some of them say 'no more coronavirus,' 'go away, COVID.' Or, you know, 'you can't have a rainbow without a little rain.'"

Womeldorf will deliver the cards to Rochester nursing homes and assisted living centers this week.

"They just found the beauty in the dark, and that's wonderful to see," Womeldorf said. "The kids were sharing their stories about their families or siblings or their pets and coloring. They're just really focused on bringing the light, the beauty around us."

Womeldorf has also branched out to schools beyond Rochester. Students from Owatonna and Wabasha have joined the effort and made cards. Those will be delivered this week.
