Superintendent Jorge Aguilar emphasizes that they've done everything they can to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, and points out that extending distance learning could keep impacting groups that have been disproportionately affected throughout the pandemic."Already, there are numerous studies that have demonstrated how that learning loss has impacted our students, and it certainly has impacted our underrepresented, educationally-disadvantaged students the most," he said.But it may not be enough. Taking a statewide look, Latinos are leading in the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases at 55.5%, and deaths also higher than any other race and ethnicity at 46.4%. This could be the reason why this group in particular might be hesitant to send their kids back to school."I'd feel safer if most of the adults in my community got the vaccine. That way I'd be more sure that my daughter won't catch COVID," says Salas.While Hispanics and Latinos make up the majority of students in the Sacramento City School District, they rank fifth among racial and ethnic groups committed to coming back for in-person learning.
