Aaron Boone is currently recovering from Wednesday’s surgery to implant a pacemaker, and his Yankee players made sure their manager knew he was in their thoughts.
Luke Voit, speaking with reporters after the team’s spring training game against the Phillies on Thursday, said that the players had put together a get well video for Boone, which Brett Gardner sent on behalf of the team.
“We had a team meeting about it, and had a couple coaches explain what was going on,” Voit said. “A lot of us knew that he had a heart condition from eight or nine or 10 years ago, so we didn’t realize how serious things were going and we wanted to send a video to him.”
Voit and the team talked with Boone on Wednesday, when the team announced that the manager was taking an immediate medical leave of absence, and was reassured by the simplicity of the operation, which should have Boone ready to return in “as early as 48 to 72 hours,” according to general manager Brian Cashman.
“He seems like he’s in good spirits,” Voit said. “I know he’s doing really well. I think it was something that eventually needed to get done. I know he just wants to get back out there and be with the boys. He misses us and miss him too, and offer him the best of luck in his recovery.”
Until Boone is able to return to the team, he’ll have a video from his players to wish him the best in what should be a quick road to recovery.
“We wanted to keep him positive and know he’s got plenty of time…to get right before he comes back and helps lead us to a championship,” Voit said.
