DENISON, Iowa (KTIV) - It was an unusual sight near Denison High School on Friday at 3:30 a.m. with the ball fields lit up and staff and students lining the streets.

Dozens of students and fellow teachers got up in the early morning hours to send off Adam Burns to Omaha for surgery.

According to a page set up by the family back in March, Burns began having issues with numbness and difficulties typing.

On Friday, April 9, Burns had an MRI which unveiled a five- to a seven-centimeter brain tumor.

Now Burns is off to Omaha to have the tumor removed. Students say that they wanted to be there for Mr. Burns and show that they're in the fight alongside him.

"Coach Burns has had an impact on everybody's life, whether its in the slightest way, everyone knows who Coach Burns is, everyone knows who Mr. Burns is, he may of taught you in math, he may of coached you on the field, you know everyone knows," said Michael Madeira, Senior.

"They did find a brain tumor last Friday, so we're just here to show him that we all care about him," said Hannah Neemann, Senior.

"It hurt, it hurt to see someone like him someone like him, a great guy, could get diagnosed, but you know if anyone can get through it, its Coach Burns, we're with him, we know he can fight it and win this," said Madeira.

"He's truly a friend to all of the students here, and he spends a lot of time to help us, so we thought doing something small like this for him would be right," said Neemann.

"It means a lot, I mean he's been my coach for four years. We all know how much time he spends away from his wife and kids to be the best coach that he can be, so it just means a lot to be able to give back to him in some way," said Neemann.

"Being here to support him, I think it meant a lot to him and it means a lot to us to know that we're all here for him" said Madeira.

"Really showing him that he's not alone in this and that we're all here to fight with him," said Neemann.

The family says that they will be posting updates on Burns' progress on his Caring Bridge page which can be found here.
