Parents, are you sending your kids to summer camp this year?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) just updated its COVID-19 guidelines for summer camps as camp season approaches. The updated information includes details about vaccines, ventilation and water systems, physical distancing, contact tracing, physical barriers, communal spaces, overnight camps, and more.

The CDC advises choosing outdoor activities whenever possible, wearing “well-fitting masks with proper filtration” at all times except during activities such as eating and swimming, avoiding close-contact or indoor sports, and maintaining at least three feet of distance between campers in the same cohort and at least six feet of distance between campers outside of the same cohort.

“Youth and summer camps can play an important role in the lives of children, including supporting their social, emotional, and physical development,” wrote the CDC. “The present guidance is intended to help camp administrators operate camps while preventing the spread of COVID-19 and protecting campers, their families, staff, and communities.”

As of April 19, all Massachusetts residents 16 years and older became eligible for a COVID-19 vaccination. And as of Monday, more than a third of Massachusetts residents have been fully vaccinated. Vaccinations for kids under age 16 are still in the trial phase, and Pfizer says its vaccine is 100 percent effective for kids age 12 to 15, according to The Boston Globe. In a poll conducted by Suffolk University and the Globe, more than 53 percent of Massachusetts residents said they would vaccinate their children, about 35 percent said they would not, and nearly 11 percent were undecided.
