MILL CREEK — The Tygarts Valley Middle School girls varsity and junior varsity teams send their coach out with wins over Philippi on Thursday night.
Longtime Lady Bulldog mentor Tim Coberly announced after the game he plans to retire.
“It’s been a very emotional day,” Coberly said. “But I was tickled the girls were able to end the season on a winning note.”
Coberly coached the team for 19 years. He spent a total of 21 years in the coaching fraternity, also serving as a mentor in youth leagues and the elementary divisions.
“I think I only had four losing seasons in my 19 years (at TVMS),” Coberly said. “But that’s not because of my coaching. It was the players out on the court giving their blood, sweat and tears.”
In Thursday’s finale for Coberly against Philippi, the Lady Bulldogs (6-9) claimed the varsity game, 36-27, as Kailen Yokum scored 19 and Summer Lewis-Smith eight.
Avery McDaniels led Philippi with nine and Olivia Wilmoth added 8.
In the preliminary JV encounter, TV (5-5) claimed a 36-7 victory as Yokum netted 10, Alyssa Swecker six and Kaitlinn Lanham five.
