Two Pennsylvania state senators have sent a letter to the MLB inviting them to host the 2021 All-Star Game in Pittsburgh. Pennsylvania Sen. Jay Costa (D-Allegheny) and Chairman of the Sports and Exhibition Authority Sen. Wayne D. Fontana (D-Allegheny) sent the letter on Friday after the MLB announced it was moving this summer's All-Star Game from Atlanta's Truist Park, a response to Georgia enacting a new law last month restricting voting rights."They tried to limit the voters' access to the poles, primarily targeting African American individuals," says Sen. Jay Costa, who also serves as chairman of the Allegheny County Sports Commission. "Lets' call it what it is."MLB's announcement came eight days after Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp signed a sweeping Republican-sponsored overhaul of state elections that includes new restrictions on voting by mail and greater legislative control over how elections are run. "Your decision to stand against voter suppression in moving the annual celebration from Georgia is honorable and we support it completely. Voting is an essential, democratic right in this country and we all must take a stand. There is nothing more American than voting and baseball," the letter Costa and Fontana sent said in part. The letter to the MLB also said "Pennsylvania boasts unfettered access for our citizens to the ballot box.""In 2019, we passed a major expansion of voting access, Act 77, permitting no-excuse mail-in ballots. We offer online voter registration, 13 hours of open polls, and our state’s Supreme Court has struck down efforts to impose onerous and discriminatory Voter ID requirements. Pennsylvania stands with Major League Baseball in prioritizing democracy, and we would be honored to host the annual All-Star Game this year. Please consider coming to the state of the nation’s first capital as we work together to protect its first principles," the letter said. Read the full letter in the tweet below. Mayor Bill Peduto's chief of staff Dan Gilman said the city has started conversations on the potential ability to host the game in Pittsburgh. "With today’s news, we have begun conversations on the potential ability to host in Pittsburgh. We believe this could be a win for our hospitality industry and also highlight Pittsburgh and Allegheny county’s commitment to voter protection," Gilman told Pittsburgh's Action News 4. In a statement, the Pirates said they have not had discussions with the MLB regarding hosting the game.
