ARLINGTON — The Astros optioned seldom-used utilityman Robel Garcia to Class AAA Sugar Land before Friday’s game against the Rangers, clearing a roster spot for starting pitcher Tyler Ivey.
Garcia appeared in just 13 games and took 23 plate appearances across the first two months of play. Aledmys Díaz separated himself as the superior bench bat while playing almost all of Garcia’s most natural defensive positions, leaving the 28-year-old waiver claim as the odd man out.
Garcia’s demotion means the Astros could play with a three-man bench throughout their series against the Rangers — Díaz, Chas McCormick and Martín Maldonado or Jason Castro.
Manager Dusty Baker did not sound enthused about the idea and intimated another position player could be called up after Ivey’s start on Friday. Garcia must stay in the minor leagues for 10 days following his demotion.
If the Astros do summon another player, their most logical option is Taylor Jones, who entered Friday with a 1.085 OPS in his first 52 plate appearances with Class AAA Sugar Land. Abraham Toro remains on the injured list with an oblique strain, and Jones is the only other position player with major league experience on the 40-man roster.
