India recorded more than 400,000 new cases of COVID-19 in a single day. The number shatters global records."It is just heartbreaking. You hear the stories and it's just like, 'Oh my God,'" Mandeep Kaur, member of the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin in Oak Creek, told 12 News. Kaur has family, friends and employees in India now. Leaders say hospitals there are overwhelmed, and running out of oxygen to treat COVID patients."We knew that this was possible but I don't think anybody thought to this extent. The pictures are devastating, the stories are devastating," Kaur said. "People can’t get oxygen, they can’t get beds, they can’t get simple supply that as a citizen you’re entitled to."Kaur said most disturbing are the mass cremations."The country is getting to the point where they are cremating people in large quantities. So you can’t even leave in peace. You know it's heartbreaking.” Kaur volunteers for Khalsa Aid, an International nonprofit designed to provide disaster relief in humanitarian crises. The group is working to get oxygen cylinders to India.“There’s just a lot of hurdles that we’re having to go through to get these supplies to people in need," Kaur explained.“Logistically we’re having difficulties trying to get the supplies there; One because the voltage is different here ," she said. “So even if we send oxygen cylinders it will be used up right away, and they have to correct the voltage and it’s a process.”She also said shipping oxygen over borders 8,000 miles away is a challenge. The group is currently working on a plan to ship supplies directly from the U.S. “What we’re doing is sending them from the U.K., the U.K. is the midpoint, so we’re trying to consolidate them in the U.K. and then the U.K. will ship them," Kaur told 12 News.According to the Khalsa Aid Facebook, the group shipped at least 200 Oxygen Concentrators this week that will arrive in Delhi Saturday.Kaur told 12 News she does not believe the travel restrictions between the U.S. and India will impact the shipping efforts. For more information on the Khalsa Aid efforts click here.
