HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — It's the last day of the school year for Hillsborough County Schools and that can be an emotional time.
What You Need To Know
- Friday was the last day of classes for Hillsborough County schools
- It was also Mulrennan Middle School Principal Tim Ducker's last day before retirement
- Students and staff surprised him with a flash mob send-off Friday
Students and teachers at Mulrennan Middle School in Valrico found that to be especially true as they gathered to say goodbye to their principal, Tim Ducker, who is retiring.
Ducker was told he was needed outside to break up a fight. What he didn't know is that the entire school had been keeping a secret for weeks.
"Teachers kept telling us 'Shhhhh, don't tell anybody,'" student Phoenix Phillips said. "We kept it really, really quiet."
More than 100 people gathered on the field as Ducker was hoisted up in a bucket truck.
Once he had a bird's eye view, they broke into a choreographed song and dance, creating a flash mob to the song "Don't Stop Believing" for the principal who always believed in them.
"He's the best principal and he never gives up on us," said student Myah Euell.
Ducker stood in the bucket, smiling and flashing "love" signs at the crowd.
"This is amazing, I'm telling you," he said. "I can't believe they were able to pull this off and I didn't have a clue. I'm not doing a good job am I if they had two cranes on the back of my school and I didn't even know it."
Staff members said Ducker is known for always putting students first, but on his last day of school, everyone wanted to make sure the attention was on him.
"He is caring, he is considerate, he is thoughtful, he is organized," said teacher Barbie White. "Everybody has the utmost respect for him."
Ducker said the secret to his success is simple, he loves the students and wants them to succeed.
"They laugh at me a lot because every time I do an intercom announcement I always end it with 'I love you guys' and they know that," he said. "It's something that's real and I think that makes a huge difference."
Ducker is still deciding what he'll do next but he said it will involve fishing and traveling.
He's been with Hillsborough County Public Schools for 36 years, serving as principal at Mulrennan Middle School for the past 15.
