As the “Star Wars” universe continually expands with new stories and characters, here come “The Bad Batch” on Disney+ Tuesday.
For anyone curious as to who — or what — the Bad Batch is exactly, they were introduced in the final season of the hit animated “Star Wars” series “The Clone Wars.”
“When I first saw the original story arc, I immediately responded to it because I got the dynamic between this squad,” explained Jennifer Corbett, a Navy veteran who is the series’ head writer and executive producer.
“I understand how people in the military become like brothers and sisters when you’re on missions together. You see the camaraderie and banter that comes with with people living so closely in high-stress situations.
“That’s what I try to bring to ‘Bad Batch.’ How this squad, even though they are these elite soldiers, are this family. They don’t agree all the time because they’re all so very different.”
The Bad Batch specifically are a squad of elite, experimental clones that operate in the immediate aftermath of the Clone Wars as enormous changes happen with the Republic, suddenly the Empire.
Dee Bradley Baker, who voiced the Clones, does all the Bad Batch voices. Unlike the Clones, each Bad Batch has a distinct personality. Baker said, “That makes it a little bit easier to jump from character to character to character.
“For me,” Baker continued, “it feels like I’m jumping from rock to rock on a stream. I can see the rock — the writing is clear. And what I jump to is that character. I feel like I know them.
“As a voice actor,” he confided, “it’s a really fascinating process to have these scenes where I’m just talking to myself, switching from character to character as we go through the script.
“Which is typically how we do it: just go straight through. It’s fantastic fun.”
Baker outlines each Batch member, beginning with Hunter, who’s “the leader of the pack. He’s got tracking skills and smell and this heightened sense that helps him gauge the terrain.
“The very technically oriented Tech always has a handheld device that he’s working on. He’s super cool, super calm and competent with all things technical.
“Wrecker, to no one’s surprise, is the muscles of the group. He’s got incredible strength. Crosshair is the sharpshooter, a contrary character who’s quite interesting in their dynamic.
“Echo is a modified android clone from ‘Clone Wars’ who was brought onboard with the Batch.
“That’s the gang! Together they are a force to be reckoned with.”
