Donor makes $25,000 offer to send more kids to camp on one condition - Long Beach Press Telegram

A philanthropic Long Beach donor has agreed to contribute $25,000 so more kids can enjoy a week at a camp in the mountains this summer.

This offer, however, has one condition attached to it.

The donor, who wants to remain anonymous, said their offer is contingent on Press-Telegram readers contributing $25,000 in funds to match their $25,000 donation.

That means any reader donations between now and July 4, the last day of the Press-Telegram Send-a-Kid-to-Camp campaign, that total $25,000 will be matched by this anonymous donor.

“This matching offer is very generous and will send many more kids to have a life-changing outdoors experience that might not otherwise have been possible. It makes my heart smile,” said Marcelle Epley, president and CEO of the Long Beach Community Foundation, which has partnered with the Press-Telegram to send kids to overnight mountain camps. The 22nd annual Press-Telegram Send-a-Kid-to-Camp campaign is currently underway, asking again for readers to help send kids to camps operated by the Big 5 youth organizations: the YMCA of Greater Long Beach, Boys & Girls Clubs of Long Beach, Camp Fire Angeles, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.

The campaign was started by the late Press-Telegram columnist Tom Hennessy and Jean Bixby Smith, chair emeritus of the Long Beach Community Foundation.

Epley said she has been gratified at how Press-Telegram readers have responded with donations so far, especially during such a tough year, with the city and nation only now beginning to come out the other side of the coronavirus pandemic.

The anonymous donor making the $25,000 matching offer said the pandemic made it more important than ever to help as many kids as possible get outdoors and see the stars and smell the pine trees.

“There’s nothing like being in the mountains during the day and at night,” the donor said.

You are being asked to continue the donations to meet the matching offer of $25,000. Your dollars will send children to a once-in-a-lifetime experience at a mountain camp for one week.

We invite you to make a contribution this year and make a child’s dream come true. Keep in mind that it takes $450, on the average, to send one youngster to one week at camp. If you want to donate, online donations are preferred and can be submitted to longbeachcf.org/donate/skc.

You can also mail a check, payable to the Long Beach Community Foundation (with Send-a-Kid-to-Camp in the memo), to: Long Beach Community Foundation, 400 Oceangate, Suite 800, Long Beach, CA 90802.

Thank you in advance for making a difference in the lives of many financially needy children.
