Democrats showed Lee Carter the door during today’s Primary Election, deciding not to send Virginia’s first self-described democratic socialist back to Richmond.
Carter had represented the 50th House of Delegates District in Manassas, and in the Bristow section of Prince William County since 2017. Today, voters chose political newcomer Michelle Lopes-Maldonado as their nominee for the seat, beating carter by six points.Rounding out the three-way race for the seat was Helen Zurita, who last year unsuccessfully ran for a seat on the Manassas City Council. Here are the results of the race.
Lopes-Maldonado boasts a Doctorate Degree from George Washington University and has worked as a corporate attorney, and later worked for the American Public University System developing relationships with corporations.
Carter posted to Twitter following his loss.
This job has made me miserable for the last 4 years.
I made a lot of people's lives objectively better, but the constant assassination threats and harassment were terrible for my family and my health.
I'm relieved to say that I've done my part, and now it's someone else's turn.

Last year, Carter gained attention during a riot that occurred on May 29 outside Manassas. Carter confronted police and was pepper-sprayed during the riot, in which four Prince William County police officers were injured.
Carter was also an outspoken critic of a 2018 deal to expand Micron Technology campus in his home district of Manassas. The expansion — the largest public-private deal in modern Virginia history, eclipsing the Amazon H2 deal that landed in Arlington — is set to bring more than 1,100 highly skilled jobs to the region.
Carter highlighted his bills to help lower the cost of insulin, legalize pot, and abolish the death penalty as some of his highlights in office.
Republicans last month chose Dr. Steve Pleickhardt as the 50th-District nominee during a firehouse primary on May 1. Pleickhardt operates two dental offices — one in Manassas and the other in Bristow and has lived in Prince William County since 2004.
