Missy is 7 pounds of pure love: Send us your pet rescue stories - cleveland.com

send.indah.link

PARMA, Ohio -- One day on the internet, we saw this little dog for sale. We agreed to meet the seller, and when we saw the dog we knew we had to have her!

Missy, her new name, is a Japanese Chin. She has been our constant companion ever since. She would like to sleep on our bed but, because she is so small, we are afraid she could fall off and get hurt.

Missy will stay at the door to our bedroom at night. When the lights go out, she moves to her own bed. In the morning, she whimpers for Carol to take her out.

You need to know that my wife, Carol, and I both truly love this dog. Unfortunately, I needed to spend time in a hospital and more time in rehab. Perhaps because of that, Missy and Carol grew closer.

Yes, a dog is work. Missy is now blind in one eye and has some hearing loss, but still is 7 pounds of joy and love.

I invite you to read, “I Have You Now” by Karen Sandstrom. She is a writer and illustrator in Cleveland. This article appears in the March 2020 edition of “Real Simple.”

Ernie Noetzel,

Parma

Send election letters to Daily Union editor sooner than later - Daily Union

send.indah.link

Well, October has arrived and we are one month away from the Nov. 3rd general election. Although the Daily Union already has had a fairly good number of letters to the editor relating to seats and issues that will be on the ballot, we expect that to ramp up bigtime during the next couple of weeks.

And so we would like to ask readers' assistance.

Not unlike the frustration of being inundated with political TV commercials and robo-calls, having to read, correct spelling and punctuation, and juggle countless letters about the contested presidential and state Assembly races and county's advisory referendum on redistricting at the last minute can be overwhelming. In addition, we can not ensure that your letter will make it in, as space is limited.

Now we get it: The election season has been going on for, well, it seems like forever, but often people don't think about writing their letter to the editor until it's almost time to head to the polls. So this is a not-so-gentle reminder to do it now, rather than later.

First of all, requests for absentee ballots have been at an all-time high across Jefferson County, so many folks already are voting via mail or soon will be doing in-person absentee, or "early voting," at their municipal office. So if you want to sway opinions, the early bird will get the worm.

Moreover, we want to ensure that everyone who takes the time to write a letter gets it published in the Daily Union. So we offer the following guidelines:

• Shorter always is better, although we do allow up to 500 words. Remember, though, that rambling can cause readers to zone out.

• Earlier is better than later. To ensure that we have time and space to get all election-related letters in the Daily Union, we have set a deadline to receive them as Friday, Oct. 16. That is only two weeks from now, but it also is only a few days more than two weeks from the election.

Any letters received after the deadline might very well get in, but that will depend on space. We will try to print them in order of receipt, with shorter ones likely given precedence so we can fit more writers' letters on the editorial page.

• Remember that all letters must be "signed" with your name, address, telephone number and email. We will print only your name and town.

And here is a tip: Letters coming in via email to cspangler@dailyunion.com likely will get printed quicker than hand-written ones sent via snail-mail. The managing editor only has so much time to retype letters, so any help on your end is appreciated greatly.

• Please limit the number of letters you send. One is great, and a second on a different topic might — just might — find a spot. However, choose your topics wisely, as we wish to give everyone of all political persuasions a chance to have their say.

• Oh, and we do not print letters from the candidates themselves. They will be getting plenty of publicity from coverage of forums and our one-on-one interviews (and hopefully, their advertisements), and we want to save the space for you, the people.

• Finally, we don't pick and choose letters to print, unless we feel the rhetoric is libelous or vicious. In such a case, the managing editor retains the right to edit or even choose not to print the letter.

Newspapers are a clearinghouse for the exchange of ideas, and the letters to the editor column is a big part of that. So start jotting down your thoughts now, and tell your friends to do the same.

Time is of the essence, and we look forward to hearing from you.

Dylan Carlson, Yadier Molina send message, have Cardinals on cusp of NL Division Series - USA TODAY

send.indah.link
CLOSE

SportsPulse: Which Chicago team will surprise? Is there a team from Ohio that could make a run? Are the Yankees primed for an early exit? Our experts predict their dark horses and disappointments for the postseason. USA TODAY

SAN DIEGO – The 21-year-old kid had his coming out party Wednesday afternoon, right there on the national stage.

The 38-year old man reminded everyone, that he may be old, battered and bruised, but even now 17 years after it all began, he still can influence a game like no other.

Together, Dylan Carlson and Yadier Molina have the St. Louis Cardinals on the brink of another postseason series victory, with the chance to clinch the best-of-three wild-card series Thursday after their 7-4 victory over the San Diego Padres at Petco Park.

Carlson, appearing in his first postseason game, and Molina, appearing in his National League record 99th postseason game, combined to reach base seven times and score four runs, with a pair of doubles.

“We wanted to come out,’’ Carlson said, “make a statement. There was a lot of excitement around this one.’’

Well, leave it to the switch-hitting kid who was in the Cardinals’ alternative camp site just two weeks ago, hitting .162 at the time of his demotion, to make a first impression not seen in Cardinals’ country since the days of Stan Musial and Albert Pujols.

They were the only players in the Cardinals’ rich history to hit cleanup at the age of 21 or younger in a postseason game, but while those legendary hitters were hitless in their debuts (in the 1942 World Series and 2001 Division Series) – while Carlson made an immediate impact in Game 1.

Carlson, who had batted cleanup only once in his career until Wednesday, went 2-for-3 with two walks, a double, scored two runs, stole a base, and made a spectacular diving catch that had Padres’ star Manny Machado shaking his head in disbelief.

He became the youngest Cardinals’ player with two hits and two runs in his postseason game since Joe “Ducky’’ Medwick in 1934, and only the third player in MLB history, joining Ronnie Stennett (1972) and Chris Speier (1971) to accomplish the feat.

The kid showed that belongs, and may never set foot in a minor-league camp again.

“He's very even-keeled," said Cardinals first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, whose two-run, first-inning homer, set the stage. “He's done it in spring training as a 19 and 20-year-old. That's the thing that has impressed me."

Only time will tell whether he becomes a star, but certainly he’s showing a glimpse of why the Cardinals believe he’ll be a mainstay in their lineup.

WILD CARD:Eight things we learned from the eight playoff games

WHOOPS:Cardinals player ties dubious MLB record

“I think his confidence level has really gone up,’’ Cardinals shortstop Paul DeJong said. “He was trying to figure out who he is as a player, and it always has growing pains. Everybody’s journey is different.’’

He barely resembles the guy who was demoted in early September to their alternate camp, hitting .162 with a .215 on-base percentage and .243 slugging percentage, leaving Cardinals Nation to wonder if their No. 1 prospect was nothing more than an over-hyped suspect.

“The first time around,’’ Carlson said, “there was a lot going on. A lot of different voices, different things.

“The big thing for me to focus on was being myself, playing my game.’’

Carlson hit  .277 with four doubles, a triple and two homers in the final nine days of the season, and with the Cardinals’ offensive woes during the season – producing the second-fewest runs with the second-worst worst slugging percentage in the National League – Cardinals manager Mike Shildt gambled that Carlson was ready for this moment.

“I told him this is an opportunity,’’ Shildt said, “it’s not a threat. Go play and enjoy what you do. It’s wonderful, fun playoff baseball. Just go be you and let your ability play and trust yourself.’’

Said Carlson: “To have the confidence from those guys behind me, it's a big deal.’’

Well, if Carlson needs a role model to show what can happen with perseverance and dedication, he doesn’t need to look any further than Molina.

Molina added a few more accolades to his future Hall of Fame dossier by surpassing another future Hall of Famer with his 27th career multi-hit postseason game, surpassing Albert Pujols for the most in franchise history.

“This is not by accident, or that he’s lucky’’ Shildt says, “he studies as much as anyone. He’s in the weight room, doing catching drills before guys are dressed.

“He’s a great player and does a lot of different things to help you win a game. I’m glad he’s on our side.’’

Certainly, the Padres are growing tired of seeing the guy, who once again is threatening to ruin their postseason. The last time they were in the postseason in 2006, they were eliminated by the Cardinals in the Division Series. In 2005, they were swept by the Cardinals. And now here is Molina leading the charge again, bringing along a new sidekick.

The Padres watched Carlson hit a double in his first at-bat in the first inning, and Molina, the No. 5 hitter, followed with a run-scoring single. In the third inning, Carlson singled and Molina doubled. In the sixth, Carlson walked and Molina singled.

Molina, one of only 12 catchers in history to have 2,000 hits, will be back behind the plate again Thursday. Adam Wainwright will be on the mound. It will be the 274th time Molina has caught Wainwright, the sixth most games by a battery combination in baseball history.

“It’s a tremendous blessing,’’ Wainwright says. “You played with somebody for so long that you don’t even know what it would be like without him there. One of the most proud things for me, something I can tell my kids, was that I was able to pitch to Yadier Molina every fifth day.’’

Who knows, maybe one day he’ll be able to talk about that 21-year-old cleanup hitter who burst onto the scene, too.

Outcry after reports Britain considered sending asylum seekers to island in the South Atlantic - The Washington Post

send.indah.link

The British Home Office appears to have since scrapped plans to send asylum seekers to such far-flung locations, the newspaper reported.

But even that the idea had been floated drew ire from opposition lawmakers and human rights advocates in Britain, who called it “heartless” and more.

“This ludicrous idea is inhumane, completely impractical and wildly expensive — so it seems entirely plausible this Tory government came up with it,” tweeted Nick Thomas-Symonds, the Labour Party’s shadow home secretary.

The concept also drew comparisons to Australia’s controversial offshore migrant processing centers, which Australian officials have defended as necessary to stop dangerous sea crossings to Australia but which human rights advocates have long condemned as cruel.

A spokesman for 10 Downing Street confirmed that the British government is reviewing policies on illegal migration and asylum seekers but did not offer further details.

A Home Office official said in an emailed statement: “The U.K. has a long and proud history of offering refuge to those who need protection. Tens of thousands of people have rebuilt their lives in the U.K. and we will continue to provide safe and legal routes in the future."

“As ministers have said we are developing plans to reform policies and laws around illegal migration and asylum to ensure we are able to provide protection to those who need it, while preventing abuse of the system and the criminality associated with it,” the statement said.

Later Wednesday, the Guardian reported that it had reviewed documents suggesting Downing Street has considered sending asylum seekers to Morocco, Papua New Guinea and Moldova.

A poll by YouGov.com found Britons split on the concept of an asylum processing center on Ascension Island: Forty percent said it was a good idea, 35 percent objected, and 25 percent said they did not know.

Patel has pledged to crack down on a recent surge in boats carrying migrants and asylum seekers across the English Channel. This month, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that he had sympathy for people fleeing difficult conditions at home but that crossing the Channel “also undermines the legitimate claims of others who seek asylum in this country.”

“We will address the rigidities in our laws that make this country, I’m afraid, a target and a magnet for those who would exploit vulnerable people in this way,” he said.

In August alone, nearly 1,500 people crossed the Channel in small boats, according to the BBC.

Conservative lawmaker Laura Trott said it was “absolutely right” that Britain was investigating offshore options as a way to “reduce the pressure” on Kent, where many boats are landing after crossing the Channel, the BBC reported.

Labour lawmaker Zarah Sultana tweeted that such a plan would be “an utterly heartless way to treat desperate people.”

For years, Australia has refused entry to asylum seekers attempting to reach the country by boat. Instead, passengers were redirected to offshore processing centers on Nauru and Manus Island, where many have languished for years without being resettled.

In Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s office, he keeps a small statue of a boat, with the words “I Stopped These,” inscribed on the side, the New York Times has reported.

Advocates warned in recent years that children housed in the offshore centers were exhibiting signs of resignation disorder, a medical condition brought on by extreme stress that can cause individuals to stop speaking or eating. Some children have attempted suicide.

Karla Adam in London contributed to this report.

Facebook, Instagram Users Will Soon Be Able To Send Each Other Direct Messages - Forbes

send.indah.link

Topline

Facebook will soon allow people on the social media platform to send direct messages to Instagram users and vice versa, the social media giant said in a blog post, signaling the first step in the company’s plan to unify messaging systems across all of its platforms, which also includes WhatsApp.

Key Facts

Instagram’s inbuilt instant messenger will also be updated to include a few additions including selfie stickers, custom backgrounds, and disappearing messages.

The feature will be open to all users by default but Instagram users who may want to keep their chats separate from Facebook may choose to opt-out of the update altogether, although this means they will also not receive all the other new features.

It is unclear as to when the cross-platform messaging will become available to all users, but CNN reported that the feature is presently being “tested in select markets and will expand globally in the coming months.”

The cross-platform integration presently excludes Facebook-owned messaging behemoth WhatsApp which has over 2 billion users worldwide.

Unlike Facebook Messenger and Instagram’s direct messages, WhatsApp features end-to-end encryption that prevents third parties including government and law enforcement from peering into messages in transit.

In 2019, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg had outlined a plan that would see his company pivot away from public communications to focus on encrypted private messaging.

Crucial Quote

Responding to a question on WhatsApp integration on Twitter, Facebook’s EMEA Technology Communications Manager Alexandru Voica wrote, “Right now, we are focused on cross-app communications Messenger and Instagram. We are still determining how cross-app communications will work with WhatsApp. WhatsApp will continue to remain a separate, end-to-end encrypted app at this time.”

Chief Critic

After Zuckerberg announced his company’s intention to integrate its service, Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes wrote for the New York Times, calling for Facebook to be broken up. Arguing that Facebook has become a monopoly which in turn has limited competition and held back innovation, Hughes wrote, “Mark’s influence is staggering, far beyond that of anyone else in the private sector or in government. He controls three core communications platforms — Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp — that billions of people use every day.” He then called on the government to move quickly to split Facebook from Instagram and WhatsApp adding, “Until recently, WhatsApp and Instagram were administered as independent platforms inside the parent company, so that should make the process easier. But time is of the essence: Facebook is working quickly to integrate the three, which would make it harder for the F.T.C. to split them up.”

Tangent

On Tuesday, Facebook announced that it was testing a unified ‘Accounts Centre’ that would control login and other activity on Facebook, Instagram, Messenger from a single platform. Once operational this will allow users to log into all three of the apps from a single platform and cross-post content. “Whether you want to share a story to Instagram and Facebook at the same time, or use your Facebook account to log into Instagram, setting up your Accounts Center will allow you to control connected experiences that work across our apps,” Facebook said in its blog post.

Key Background

Lawmakers around the world have expressed concern over Facebook’s plan to integrate its messaging platforms. The company is presently facing antitrust scrutiny in both the U.S. and the European Union. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) has called for the breaking up of big tech companies including Facebook. The Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden and his running mate Kamala Harris have both said that the issue of breaking up Facebook is something that needs to be given a serious look. However, breaking the company up may become difficult if Facebook manages to merge all its services under a single umbrella.
