Minnesota Vikings edge rusher Yannick Ngakoue was a name that some San Francisco 49ers fans were hoping the front office would find a way to land. Ngakoue is in the final year of his contract, where he has a cap number of $12 million, and hadn’t worked out an extension with the Vikings. Well, that door slammed shut Thursday morning as the Vikings sent Ngakoue to the Baltimore Ravens for their 2021 third-round pick plus a 2022 conditional fifth-round pick. Ngakoue has four sacks, and four QB hits on the season.
If you’re Minnesota, you just sent a second-round pick this past offseason to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Six games in, you’re pulling the plug on your investment, and now you’ve lost that pick in exchange for a third-rounder. That can’t be easy to swallow.
The Vikings may not be done unloading. They have two other impending free agents in offensive tackle Riley Reiff and safety Anthony Harris. Neither are likely to be there in 2021, anyway. Harris would be an interesting fit, though he’s on a one-year deal worth about $11 million. While some of that will be prorated, I wonder if John Lynch picks up the phone and asks what his going rate would be.
The 49ers added Jordan Willis, but he’s not moving the needle, and, more than anything, pass rusher is still a need. Could we see the 49ers be buyers for teams that are selling these next two weeks?
