Do you have a veteran that’s important in your life? Even though my father passed away 14 years ago, I think of him daily and I am proud of his military service.
Dad didn’t talk about the war much. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp in 1952 and fought in the Korean War. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and the Purple Heart Medal.
He would talk about the horror of war only once to me when I was about 20 years old. This conversation was filled with grisly details of what I can only imagine was a living hell for a 20-year-old kid from North Dakota.
Dad suffered from alcoholism as well as undiagnosed depression. I am sure the war contributed to those illnesses — I believe he paid a price for serving our country and had the emotional and physical scars to prove it.
My favorite veteran is gone. I hope he knew how proud I was—and continue to be—of him.
