CLEVELAND, Ohio -- It’s still undetermined who won the Mike Clevinger trade, but at least now everyone knows the names of the players involved.
The nine player Aug. 31 deadline deal was officially completed on Monday when the Indians sent minor league right-hander Matt Waldron to the Padres. Waldron was the player to be named in the trade, joining Clevinger and outfielder Greg Allen in San Diego.
The Indians received six players. First baseman-outfielder Josh Naylor, right-hander Cal Quantrill and catcher Austin Hedges joined the big league club. Three younger players also came the Indians way -- shortstop Gabriel Arias, left-hander Joey Cantillo and infielder Owen Miller. Arias, Cantillo and Miller just finished a month of training and game action in the Indians' Fall Instructional League in Goodyear, Ariz.
Clevinger was the big player in the deal. The Indians traded him because they didn’t want to pay him for the 2021 season. He’s eligible for arbitration and may earn close to $8 million.
The Padres wanted Clevinger for the stretch run, but he proved to be of little value. He injured his right forearm and pitched just one inning in the postseason after making four regular-season starts following the trade.
Waldron, 24, was the team’s 18th round pick in the 2019 draft from the Univerity of Nebraska. He was a combined 4-0 with one save and a 2.96 ERA in 14 outings in 2019 between the Arizona Rookie League and Class A Mahoning Valley. He struck out 57, walked four and allowed 15 earned runs in 45 2/3 innings.
